La rencontre s'est bien passé. La durée d'adaptation du chaton à biscotte a été d'une petite semaine. Maintenant, ce sont les meilleurs amis du monde.

Bonjour tout le monde!
Quelques photos de mon nouveau hobby : le cerf-volant de traction.
Pour le moment je pratique le maniement, j'attends l'hiver pour essayer avec des snowblades ou un surf...
J'ai deux voiles : une de 1,9 m3 à deux lignes et une de 3,5 m3 à 4 lignes.
Pour l'instant je maîtrise assez bien la petite, et je commence à savoir contrôler la grande.

Noël en Finlande en famille - Family Xmas in Finland

Cette année, j'ai passé noël en Finlande avec mes parents et mon frère. Nous avons passé 3 jours dans un cottage à Isokyrö, à une quarantaine de kilomètres de Vaasa. Nous avons mangé du ruis leipa (pain noir), fait un bon paquet de feux pour réchauffer la maison, visité les alentours et bien sûr nous sommes allés au sauna. Ca a été l'occasion nous reposer et de les introduire un peu plus avec la culture finlandaise.

This year, I spent chistmas in Finland with my parents and my brother. We spent 3 days in a cottage located in Isokyrö, about fourty kilometers from Vaasa. We ate ruis leipa (dark bread), made tons of fires to heat up the house, visited the surroundings, and of course we went to sauna. It has been the opportunity to relax and to introduce them a little bit more with the Finnish culutre.

La semaine dernière j'ai acheté un nouvel appareil photo. Donc ce week-end je sorti pour l'essayer. En me promenant dans la forêt près de l'hopital, j'ai eu deux révélations.
Premièrement, qu'est-ce qu'il fait sombre dans ce pays! Bon d'accord, je le savais déjà. Bien que le soleil ne fût pas encore couché (mmmm, le beau subjonctif passé), le flash sortait tout seul dès que je le mettait en auto.
La seconde est venue un peu plus tard en regardant les photos. Certaines avaient l'air d'être prises partiellement en noir et blanc.
Je commence à comprendre pourquoi je trouve cette saison si déprimante.

Last week I bought a new camera. So this week-end I go out to try it. And then I had 2 revelations.
First of all, it's bloody dark in this country! Ok, I knew that already. Even though the sun was not set yet, the flash was poping out almost every time in automatic mode.
The seconde one came a bit later, as I was watching the pictures. Some of them seemed to have been shot partly in black and white.
Now I start to understand why I find this season so depressing here.

Aujourd'hui est un jour d'automne spécial. Il fait 2-3 degrés C, et les premiers flocons sont tombés ce matin. Comme le sol n'est pas encore gelé, la neige ne tient pas encore. Il faut être patient. Ceci nous rapelle que l'hiver arrive.
Première conséquence : il est temps de penser à installer les pneus d'hiver. Dès qu'il fera un peu plus sec...

Today is special automn day. The temperature is about 2-3 deg C, and the first snowflakes fell this morning. As the ground is not frozen yet, the snow is not holding yet. We just have to be patient. This is a reminder that the winter is coming.
First consequence : It is time to start thinking of installing winter tyres. As soon as it get a bit dryer...

Parfois la vie nous réserve quelques surprises sur nous-même...
Il y a six ans, si quelqu'un m'avait dit :
"Julien, tu vivras au mois les cinq prochaines années de ta vie en Finlande"
Je lui aurais probablement ri au nez. Et pourtant... ca fait cinq ans que j'habite ici. Après tout, quand on y pense, pourquoi pas?
De la même manière, si quelqu'un m'avait dit :
"Julien, dans un futur proche, tu participeras à une compétition de course à pied et tu apprécieras"
Comment aurais-je pu le croire ? Ceux qui me connaissent bien savent que j'ai, comme on dit chez nous, "le cul un peu lourd" quand il s'agit de courrir, et quel intérêt j'ai toujours porté aux fameuses sessions d'endurance quand on avait sport au lycée. Et pourtant... Ca fait trois ans que je participe à une compétition en équipe ou je cours 10 km en relai nommée Korsholms Stafetten. Ca se passe tous les ans au mois de mai. La recette de la réussite: une équipe super motivée, une grosse teuf après la course, et quelques soirées pour garder la motivation pendant l'année. Au fait, si j'écris ca aujourd'hui, c'est parce qu'on a eu une de ces soirées hier, et que comme d'habitude, on a passé un excellent moment ensemble...

Sometimes, life brings you surprises about yourself...
Six years ago, if someone told me :
"Julien, you will spend at least the next five years of your life in Finland"
I probably would have laught at him. However... I have been living here for five years. After all, when you think about it, why not?
In the same way, if someone told me:
"Julien, in a near future, you will participate to a running competition et you will enjoy it"
How could I have believed him ? Those who know me well know that I have, as we say, "a pretty heavy ass" when it deals with running. They also know how much interest I had about the "endurance sessions" we had at sports classes in high school. However... For three years, I have been participating to a team competition where I have to run 10 km in a relay called Korsholms Stafetten. It happens every year in may The recipie of the success : A very motivated team, a big party after the race, and some smaller parties to keep the motivation during the year. By the way, if I write about this topic today, it's because we had one of these motivation evening yesterday, and we had excellent time.

Comme je l'ai écrit précédement, l'automne finlandais commence à poindre à partir de la mi août, pour laisser sa place à l'hiver à partir de début décembre. En général, les températures chutent entre 10 et 15 C en septembre, puis en dessous de 10C en octobre, autour de 0 en novembre, en dessous de 0 en décembre. La luminosité baisse également très rapidement, d'autant plus que le ciel est souvent couvert.
Les paysages sont égayés par les couleurs que prend la végétation, qui passent par toutes les nuances du vert au marron brun, en passant par le jaune et rouge, parfois sur un même arbre. Les bougies illuminent les rues et les habitations. En dépit de cela, l'automne est à mon avis la saison la plus déprimante, en particulier au mois de novembre. Ma solution à ce problème : la fuite. L'année dernière, je suis allé à La Réunion. Cette année, je pars au Maroc.

As I wrote it previously, Finnish automn starts coming in middle of August, and leaves its place to winter in beginning of december. In general, temperatures drop between 10 and 15C in September, then bellow 10C in october, around 0 in November and bellow 0 in December. The brightness drops dramatically, especially as the sky is often cloudy.
The landscapes are brightened by the colors of kinds of trees, which vary from all tones between green to brown, yellow, red. Candles illuminate streets and dwellings. In spite of that, automn is in my opinion the most depressing season, especially in november. My solution to this problem : escape. Last year, I went to La Réunion. This year, I will go to Marocco.

Avant de vivre en Finlande, je n'avais jamais réalisé à quel point les saisons sont des notions qui dépendent de la culture...
En bon francais, j'ai toujours pensé que les saisons changeaient suivant la date sur le calendrier : Le 21 juin, c'est le début de l'été, le 21 septembre, c'est le début de l'automne, le 21 décembre, le début de l'hiver, et le 21 mars, le début du printemps.
Et bien figurez-vous qu'en Finlande, ils n'ont jamais entendu parler de ca. Ici, les saisons se sentent. L'hiver c'est quand il fait bien froid et que tout est recouvert de neige. Le printemps, c'est quand les journées se ralongent, et les premières plantes commencent à pousser. L'été, c'est quand il les journées sont longues et qu'il fait "chaud". Enfin, l'automne, c'est quand il commence à refaire froid, et que les journées raccourcissent. Tout cela parait assez logique. Après tout, on pourrait appliquer une recette plus ou moins similaire en France.
Là ou ca devient interessant, c'est quand on examine quand s'appliquent les changements de saison. Prenons l'automne par exemple. Et bien en Finlande, il commence à faire frais à partir de mi-août. Donc ici, l'automne arrive mi-août. Même après 5 ans, j'ai toujours du mal à m'y habituer. Là d'ou je viens, on est encore en plein été mi-aout, et j'ai l'impression que l'automne arrive fin septembre.
Autre singuliarité : la perception du printemps. Ici, comme je l'ai écrit précédement, l'arrivée des premières plantes qui poussent correspondent au printemps. En France aussi... Sauf qu'ici, ca arrive en général quand tout est encore couvert de 10 bons centimètres de neige. Là d'où je viens, neige ne rime pas vraiment avec printemps.
L'été commence généralement début juin. Si vous comptez : juin, juillet, mi août. Ca fait au plus deux mois et demi. No comment.

Before I lived in Finland, I had never realized to which extent the seasons are concepts which depend on the culture... As a genuine French, I always thought that the seasons changed according to the date on the calendar: June 21st means beginning of summer, September 21, means beginning of autumn, December 21st beginning of winter, and March 21st beginning of spring.
Well it appeared that in Finland, people don't do it that way. Here, you feel the seasons. The winter happens when it is quite cold and that everything is covered with snow. Spring happens when the days are getting longer, and the first plants start to grow. The summer happen when days are long and that the weather is "hot". Lastly, the autumn happen when temperatures get colder, and that the days shorten. All that appears rather logical. After all, one could apply something similar in France.
It becomes interesting when we examine when the seasons change. Let's have a look at the autumn for example. Well in Finland, the weather starts to be fresh starting from mid-August. Thus here, the autumn arrives mid-August. Even after 5 years, I still have problems to get used to it. From where I'm coming, it is still full summer in middle of August, and I have the impression that the autumn arrives at the end of September.
Another singuliarity: the perception of spring. Here, as I wrote previously, the first plants blooming corresponds to spring. In France as well... However, it happens here when everything is still covered with 10 good centimetres of snow. From where I come, snow does not really rhyme with spring.
The summer generally begins at the beginning of June. If you count: June, July, semi August. It is never more than two months and half. No comment.

Salut!
Je viens de finir de mettre les photos de noel dernier et de mes vacances à La Réunion l'année dernière sur Yahoo (lien). Un peu plus de 200 photos, ca a mis pas mal de temps à tout télécharger.
Pour ceux qui ne savent pas exactement où ca se trouve La Réunion, regardez la photo plus bas. J'y ai passé deux semaines inoubliables au mois de novembre l'année dernière chez mes tantes (merci encore!!!). Je pourrais écrire un livre entier de commentaire sur ces photos tellement il y a de choses à dire.
Les vacances de noël montrent le repas chez mon oncle en Alsace, le baptème de ma cousine Agathe, une visite de Colmar, quelques jours de ski à Chamrousse avec les cousins ainsi que le réveillon.

I just finished inserting the pictures of last christmas and my holidays in La Réunion last year on Yahoo (link). Almost 200 pictures, I can guarantee you that it took some time to upload.
For those who don't know exactly where La Réunion is, look at the picture bellow. Thanks to my aunts who hosted me (thanks again!!!), I spent two unforgetable weeks there in November last year. I could write a whole book about comments from the pictures.
The christmas holidays show the christmas dinner in Alsace at my uncle's place, the baptising of my little cousin Agathe, a small visit of Colmar, a few days of skiing in Chamrousse with the cousins and new year's eve.

Ca fait déjà une semaine depuis la création de ce blog. Je suis encore super motivé, j'ai encore plein de truc en tête. Parallèlement je suis en train de télécharger mes plus vieilles photos sur yahoo photo (lien disponible dans la rubrique links). Je viens de finir les photos du nouvel an, il reste noël, la Réunion, l'Espagne, la visite de Guillaume... Mais tout ca prend du temps, donc patience... J'essaierai de vous tenir au courant des changements.

It has already been one week since this blog was created. I am still supermotivated, I still have a lot of ideas. In parallel I am uploading my older pictures onto Yahoo photo (link available). I just finished new year's, I still have Christmas, La Réunion, Spain, Guillaume's visit... But this take a lot of time, so please be patient... I'll try to keep you updated.

Les photos qui suivent ont été prises le 3 septembre 2005.
Jarno, qui est de retour des Etats-Unis pour quelques jours, a organisé une soirée sauna. Nous en avons profiter pour célébrer son anniversaire.
La Finlande est LE pays du Sauna. Tout comme un bon repas en France, le sauna joue role social important. Une atmosphère sombre, silencieuse et relaxante fait du sauna l'endroit idéal pour briser la glace et parler de soi ou simplement rire de la dernière blague, surtout après quelques bières. La sauna party se poursuit en général en boite.

Jarno, who is back from the USA to Vaasa for a couple of days, organised a sauna party. We enjoyed it to celebrate his birthday.
Finland is THE country of Sauna. As a good meal in France, Sauna plays an important social role. The dark, quiet and relaxing atmosphere of the sauna makes it the perfect place to break the ice and open up, or just simply laugh about the last joke. After the sauna party, people usually end up in night club.
